Mother's Day Gift Ideas and a Brief History

This Sunday is Mother's Day. Here are a few things to know about this holiday.

Make this Mother's Day one to remember by planning something fun. It can be simple–the important thing is to be with people you love, especially your mother.

History of Mother’s Day

Miss Anna M. Jarvis spearheaded a letter-writing campaign that eventually made Mother’s Day a national holiday on May 8, 1914. Anna was very close to her mother and after she died realized that children should appreciate their mother’s more when they are alive. Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year.

Debbie’s Daily Dose of Food for Thought

What a lovely tribute  President George Washington gave to his mother when he said, “My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.”  Indeed, our mothers hold a special people place in our hearts. So if you can, do something with your mother on Sunday and make it a memorable day. Enjoy!

Gift Ideas

Flowers

Flowers, especially white carnations, were the first Mother’s Day gifts. They are still popular today. Why not pick up a flower arrangement or some potted spring flowers for your mother?  has a wonderful selection. If your mother likes to garden, you could give her flowers and a gift certificate. Van Wilgen’s and  have everything you need.

Candy

Another favorite is a box of chocolates. Russell Stover and Whitman  Sampler's offer nice selections or you can shop at Cindy’s Hallmark or Sweet Creations to buy a customized gift.

A Day Off

Treat your mother to breakfast, lunch or dinner out. You may want to make reservations because Mother’s Day is one of the busiest restaurant days. If you want to stay home, plan a barbecue! Pick up side salads and dessert and let Mom relax or read while someone else cooks.

Time Together

Our daily lives are busy. Slow down and spend some time with your mother. Prepare a meal, play a game, go for a walk or bake cookies together. It doesn’t really matter what you do. You will be making memories you will cherish forever. Happy Mother’s Day!
