North Branford Community Round-Up Was a Huge Success

More than 12,000 items were collected and donated to the local food bank.

The North Branford and Northford community certainly displayed its generosity on Oct. 22 when students raced around town for the 22nd annual to collect food for the less fortunate.

According to event coordinator Mark Torrente, more than 12,000 items were collected in addition to monetary donations, which tops last year's total of 10,000 items.

Students from and were assigned routes in town and went door-to-door collecting items. The team with the most items at the end of the event was the winner.

Of the 34 teams participating, the first-place team of Kara Maculaitis, Sarah Calamita, Kristen Combs, Michaela Tiani Wrica Chirozo and Sara Flannagan driven by Mrs. Maculaitis collected 775 food items and money donations.

In addition to the 34 teams, there were also many volunteers including teachers from NBIS and NBHS, members of the NBHS hockey and volleyball squads, the Interact Club and other community members.

"I was so happy because it takes us through the holidays," said Joanne Wentworth, who founded the Food Bank. " built a box for us at . People in town are so generous and we try to take care of everyone we can."
