North Branford Man Arrested for Employing Aliens

Anthony DiBenedetto, owner of Rocco's Bakery in New Haven, was sentenced to three years probation.

David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Anthony DiBenedetto, 65, of North Branford, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Mark R. Kravitz in New Haven to three years of probation for employing aliens at his business. Judge Kravitz also ordered DiBenedetto to perform 150 hours of community service.

According to court documents and statements made in court, DiBenedetto owns and operates Rocco’s Bakery with locations in New Haven and Meriden. From approximately 2000 through May 2008, DiBenedetto employed at least 10 individuals at his bakeries knowing that they were in the country unlawfully and were not authorized to work.

Judge Kravitz will schedule a hearing within 30 days to determine if DiBenedetto will be required to forfeit any assets or a money judgment in lieu of property, and pay restitution.

On Jan. 26, 2011, DiBenedetto pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful employment of aliens. This matter has been investigated by ICE Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Douglas P. Morabito.
