The Halloween Scare

"Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat. If you don't, I don't care, I'll pull down my -----"

Halloween is just around the corner and practically every mom I know is scrambling to get the . This year I had a whole plan as to how to make my Snoopy and Woodstock costumes instead of buying them.

There is something a little more nostalgic about the homemade costume. I will admit, though, that after searching stores for just the right pieces to make my costumes, I caved and bought them online. They seem a little ridiculous, but I guess that is the point of the day!

After reading some things on the Today Show Mom Blogs I began to wonder a few things about this holiday. As a parent of two very young children, I am fortunate enough to pick my kids' outfits, at least for a few more years hopefully. At this juncture in my parenting life, I also am fortunate to have two boys. For some reason, most people that I talk to find girls a bit more troublesome. Girls are adorable and sweet, but I think that most parents feel a bit more protective of their girls.

Every year it seems that costumes for teenage girls get skimpier, and for teenage boys, well, they become as minimalist as possible. It seems that at some point, the adult industry has been seeping into the juvenile stores and these businesses seem to think it appropriate to market the sexy school girl costume to school-age girls.

Many boys I see simply throw on one costume type of clothing and head out to gather up their share of the local candy. While many simply think of this holiday as a silly time to dress up and get some candy or throw a party, there are some questionable issues that are valid surrounding this holiday. Since there was no much discourse on the subject of a holiday like Columbus Day, I wonder what the feeling is about this holiday!
