Vista Student Speaks at Stamford Education for Autism Concert

Mickey Teubert, a student of Vista Vocational & Life Skills Center, attended the 7th annual Stamford Education 4 Autism concert in Stamford, CT. The concert featured a band from Long Island, Almost Famous. The proceeds for this concert go to assisting the Stamford Public School System with classroom needs, specifically for children and young adults on the Autism Spectrum. In the past, Stamford Education 4 Autism has supplied teachers and students with iPads, software, training and training materials and has provided transportation for students. Mickey’s parents are members of Stamford Education 4 Autism and have helped to shape and guide the organization.

This year at the concert opening, 10 students appeared on the stage to share their stories. Mickey was one of those students. In front of 1,200 audience members, he stepped up to the microphone like a seasoned professional, cleared his throat, and began speaking about who he is. He talked about Vista Vocational & Life Skills Center, where he is currently learning valuable life skills as an Entrance Program student. One of Mickey’s current goals at Vista is to use a “big voice” and be more assertive in order to have his needs met. In addition, he is working on skills he needs to access the community independently. Mickey also mentioned how much he like his current job at the Goodwill. Mickey ended his short speech with the infamous words of Mr. Spock from Star Trek, “Live long and prosper,” as he made the appropriate sign with his hand. The audience loved his humor and candor.
