Delays Expected Along I-91 Corridor For All Of 2013 From Amtrak Rail Work

The railroad company is looking to increase its amount of runs from New Haven to Springfield.

The bad news is that for the entire rest of the year, and longer, there will be traffic delays along the I-91 corridor in Connecticut to accommodate rail work by Amtrak.

The good news is that, if everything goes right, the construction will allow for almost three times as many Amtrak trains running round-trip from New Haven to Springfield.

The Hartford Courant reports that Amtrak is in the process of replacing signal cables beneath Amtrak crossings, mostly along the I-91 corridor, which causes traffic to be stopped for up to 15 minutes at a time. The work should continue throughout the area for at least the rest of 2013, according to the newspaper.

The point of the construction is to increase the number of runs by Amtrak from New Haven to Springfield. By 2016, if everything goes right, Amtrak will have 17 trains running round-trip from New Haven to Springfield, instead of the six it has now, according to The Courant.
