MILFORD – The death of a 34-year-old Hamden man on July 4 at Silver Sands State Park has resulted in a community conversation on ways to increase safety there.

The man was on a sandbar with a 9-year-old boy when the two were swept into the water by the powerful current of the rising tide. The boy was rescued by a jet-skier; the man’s body was found a few hours later and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The incident is the second in the past few weeks in which people were swept into the water while walking on the sandbar, which stretches from the shore to Charles Island and is only accessible at low tide.
