North Branford Women's Club to Celebrate 50 Years, Looking for Former Members

The North Branford Women's Club is looking to find the names of all its former members.

Have you or anyone else you know been a part of the North Branford Women's Club? They're looking for you!

The club and service organization is celebrating its 50th anniversary and wants to invite all of their past memebers.

"There are several previous members who we couldn't find addresses for," said Joan Pirtel, member for the last 35 years. "And it's a vast list, not just a couple of people."

The celebrations, which will be held on Oct. 2 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Church Hall, is also open to women who are considering joining the club.

"We're open to you no matter where you live. We've got members who live in East Haven, Branford, Madison and North Branford. We welcome any new women to come in," said Pirtel. "We would just like an RSVP."

Pirtel says the club began as a neighborhood organization in North Branford and Northford. The club engages in community and public services, such as establishing and contributing to the North Branford Scholarship Association, collecting food for the North Branford Food Pantry, donating a decorated Christmas tree to the Senior Center to be raffled off, as well as playing bingo and bringing fancy snacks to Evergreen Woods and Branford Hills.

Pirtel says that, while membership was around 125 with a waiting list at the club's inception, she can't say as much today.

"With so many young women working now and raising families, it's hard for them to get into outside activities on top of it," said Pirtel.

The club isn't all work, though, says Pirtel. They also engage in social activities. The game group meets up once a month, they take day trips, sometimes to the casino. A few members are planning to take a three-day trip to Vermont.

The anniversary celebration will be "like a tea time," said Pirtel with guest speakers and old photographs on display. There will also be awards and trophies on display.
