Summer Pastimes for Kids

Need some ideas for summertime fun?

Debbie’s Daily Dose of Food for Thought

"Make some time to play and pretend with your child today" Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood once said, “When children pretend, they’re using their imaginations to move beyond the bounds of reality. A stick can be a magic wand. A sock can be a puppet. A small child can be a superhero.” See what an incredible feeling of wonder you can instill in your child simply by playing together. Here are a few suggestions of things to do today – or any day!

Use Your Imagination

Pretend your backyard is another world. Help your children create and play in the kingdom of their own making. It’s amazing how an afternoon will fly by with creative adventures.

Pull a few chairs together and cover them with beach towels or old sheets to make an oasis from the sun. Snacks and drinks can make it the perfect place for lunch or a picnic!

Go Exploring

Use a hula hoop or a jump rope to mark off an area in your yard and see how many living creatures you can spot in the space. Have a pad and pencil handy to make a list and see who can find the most! If you are feeling particularly artistic, draw a few of them!

Feed the Birds

Yes, the birds can find their own food this time of year, but why not make some homemade birdfeeders with pinecones stuffed with shortening and rolled in birdseed? When done, tie them to trees close to your windows and watch the show (Branford Patch blogger r with him for a few minutes; they even shared a drink from the same cup). We are lucky to have many beautiful birds in our corner of CT. If you just sit for awhile, you will see and hear many lovely species.
