On Tonight: American Idol, Survivor: Redemption Island and Breaking In

Nine compete on Idol, contestants tough it out on Survivor and Christian Slater stars in a new sitcom.

Wednesday, April 6

American Idol, 8 p.m., Fox

So we are down to nine, with the ouster last week of Naima and Thia (both deservedly so), and we are going with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame theme and a guest-starring role by Jeff Beck. (Love Jeff Beck; cringe at the thought of him with Pia and Stefano). If you recall, friends, we have done the R&RHOF gig once before, season 7, when my beloved Jason Castro was eliminated after singing ill-advised versions of I Shot The Sheriff and Mr. Tambourine Man. Eventual winner David Cook sang an even more ill-advised Hungry Like A Wolf (dressed in that Elvis-like suit, if you recall) and a redeeming Baba O’Riley.

Survivor: Redemption Island, 8 p.m., CBS

So it’s the last Redemption Island, and Matt has an injury. Plus, I think we merge. The preview makes you think Matt is in trouble, but I’m guessing he could have severed a limb and will still beat Sarita, who could barely survive a toothache.

Breaking In, 9:30 p.m., Fox

A new sitcom, starring the ratings-beleaguered Christian Slater. I give the man credit for not giving up on TV, though TV clearly has almost given up on him. This is a sitcom, a new twist for Mr. Slater, who has failed consistently at dramas. The premise: “The owner of a high-tech security firm blackmails a computer hacker to come work for him.”
