On tonight: State of the Union address, Southland

State of the Union, 9 p.m., all networks

President Obama delivers more bad news, in a way that is supposed to make us think it is not as bad as we know it is. This will be followed by the Republican response, in which they state that it is really bad, but it is not their fault. If you need me, I’ll be catching up on DVR stuff.

I love this show about the struggling retired heavyweight champ. I love how they play with time, and how they mix up all the plotlines into a kind of story smoothie for us. And I adore Holt McCallany, all steely-eyed gaze and thick neck. Tonight is the third episode, and it’s easy to catch up if you haven’t tried this yet.

Um. Hmm. Not loving this season. Love the show, but not loving the season so far. Sammy’s marriage, Ben’s mom, the new partnership of Josie and the other female detective … not loving it. Can’t put my finger on the problem, though. Just … not loving it.
