Milford Kicks Off Parent Leadership Training Institute

Parents in the community will come together to learn how to become better civic leaders and advocates for kids.

A group of twenty parents have signed on to participate in Milford’s fourth Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) that will start on Saturday, January 21.

The Parent Leadership Training Institute program was developed by the State of Connecticut’s Commission on Children to enable parents to become leading advocates for children. The cornerstones of the program are respect, validation, and a belief that when the tools of democracy are understood, the public will actively engage in civic life.

The program comes to Milford as the result of a collaborative effort between the Milford Health Department, Milford Public Schools, the United Way of Milford, and Kids Count of Milford.

“We are proud of the way that various community organizations — public, private, and nonprofit — have come together with the goal of empowering and supporting parents and caregivers to improve the lives of children at home, in school, and in the community,” said A. Dennis McBride, MD, MPH, Health Director of the City of Milford.

PLTI students participate in an 18-week comprehensive program designed to provide the civic and leadership skills needed to work in the community on behalf of children. Each student completes a community project that contributes to the well being of Milford’s children. The community project also gives students a hands-on opportunity to apply the skills learned in the program. The 18-week program begins with an all-day retreat to be held this Saturday, January 21, 2012.

Several organizations have been involved with the Design Team for the program, including the Milford Health Department, Kids Count of Milford, United Way of Milford, , Milford Discovery Initiative, and several early childhood education representatives.

Sorry folks. We've just been informed that, due to the prediction of the inclement weather, the program will be cancelled. We'll keep everyone updated as soon as we have any information on rescheduling.

PLTI is one of the best presents I ever gave myself. I participated in the course last year after having my two (2) oldest grandchildren placed with me by DCF. The course provided me with tools which helped me advocate for the children (we have now received custody & guardianship of both children). In addition, I have become involved with a wonderful group of people. My fellow participates, the instructors, the coordinator and all the people who bring this class to Milford. I completed the course and graduated at both the local and state level. What a thrill to receive graduation honors. I am happy to say that I was able to implement my community project - "Round-2, Just When You Thought You Were Finished - Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, A Support Group. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the Month (next month will be 2/21/12 due to Valentines Day) at the Woodruff YMCA in Milford. It is a group not only open to grandparents but any one who is raising a relative child other then their own. You can locate us on Facebook at Round-2. for information please call 203-701-8411 or email maryellen@round-2.net. Best of Luck to the Class of 2012 I hope you enjoy and get as much out of this program as I did. Thank you to the Milford Health Department, Kids Count of Milford, United Way of Milford, First United Church of Christ Congregational, Milford Discover Initiative and all the others in the City of Milford who work so hard on bringing this to us.
