Meatless Monday; Facebook Fools

Almost everyone has a Facebook account these days, but maybe some people should be aware that you can be a couple of clicks away from making a complete fool of yourself.

Like the majority of the population I use social media; I’m on Facebook and Twitter. I use them to keep in touch with family and friends all over the globe, and yes I’m nosy, it’s a great way to see what’s going on in someone’s life without being creepy! Even my mom who is in her 70’s has a Facebook account, knowing that makes me think before posting a status or a photo…..what will mom think, and more importantly what will she say?

Too bad some people don’t have that kind of filter; clearly they post first and think later. A 20 year old Kentucky man posted a photo of himself on Facebook siphoning gas from a police cruiser. In a town of 2000 people I don’t know how he thought it would not be seen by someone in the local police department. Maybe he had been inhaling more than just gas fumes? Spending the night in the local jail hopefully cleared his head.

Milwaukee man Christopher Robinson did not need to steal gas, clearly he had plenty of money because he posted a photo of himself on Facebook….lying down in a pile of money. Not loose change either – lots and lots of paper bills. Whilst he was rolling around in his stash of cash he should have given a thought to his three year old child; he had not paid a penny in child support, so when the photo went viral it was not long before his baby’s mom saw it.  There is a warrant out for his arrest as he failed to appear in court, but I'm sure it won't be long before a status update gives away his whereabouts.

Oklahoma mom Misty Vanhorn didn’t need child support, if her plan worked she would not need to spend another penny on her two kids; she put them up for sale on Facebook.  Misty needed fast cash to pay her boyfriend’s bail so she thought selling her offspring would be the answer. Misty even tried to make it a great deal; $1000 per child or two for $4000. (I wonder if she planned on using some of the cash for math lessons?) Thankfully someone tipped off local police and the deal was taken down. So now Misty is in jail needing bail money….and her boyfriend is still there too.

With stupid crooks outing themselves on Facebook it was only a matter of time until tech savvy cops started using site themselves to catch criminals. Florida Sheriff Al Lamberti created a Facebook page where Broward County Residents can leave comments about local criminal activity. So far he has had some success; he busted a ring ripping off air conditioner units and a couple of newspaper coupon thieves.  Admittedly he’s not solving major crimes but if he extends his social media network to include Twitter and Tumblr who knows who he could catch in his dragnet!
