April Nor'easter: Flood Watch Issued for North Branford

A strong storm system moving into the area is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain, leading to areas of minor flooding along the shoreline Sunday into Monday morning.

Over the last several days, North Branford's weather has centered around and due to the lack of rain, low humidity and windy conditions.

But between this evening and throughout Monday many residents will find their prayers for rain have finally been answered — and then some.

Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for , as well as much of the New England, due to a strong Nor'easter moving up the coast.

The watch, which began at noon on Sunday, will run into late Monday morning.

Weather service meteorologists report that steadier rainfall associated with the storm will begin later Sunday afternoon.

"The heaviest rains will occur tonight," the service stated in its watch report Sunday. "Hourly rainfall rates approaching an inch per hour in the heaviest rain bands remains possible tonight."

Some areas of town could see more than two inches of rain.

"Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop," the service reported.

Strong Winds, Fog

In addition to heavy rains, strong winds — just under the wind advisory level — are also expected with the storm.

Winds are expected to gust between 10 to 16 miles per hour overnight.

Patch fog is also possible after 8 p.m. Sunday night, with the low temperature around 47 degrees.

Extended Forecast

The rain should continue on and off throughout the day Monday, and into Monday night, which could add up to another 1/2 inch of rain.

And that chance of showers is expected to hang on for most of the week, until Friday — which is forecast to be a sunny and mild day, with a high of 61 degrees.
