Clear a Hydrant, Win a Prize

The fire department needs fire hydrants clear of snow -- and Patch wants your photos.

With heavy snowfall expected Tuesday night into Wednesday afternoon, the fire department is asking anyone who lives near a fire hydrant to consider "adopting" it and keeping it clear of snow.

"It's often overlooked," said Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Esposito about keeping fire hydrants clear of snow. "People focus on clearing their driveways and walkways. In the event of an emergency, crucial time would be wasted" if emergency personnel are forced to handle the task.

Esposito said some parts of town don't have hydrants and rely instead on Company No. 1's tanker truck for water in the event of a fire.
