Make-Ahead Gifts for the Holidays: Homemade Dog Biscuits

What a great gift for all your friends and relatives who have dogs!

Just about everyone I know has a dog (or two) and certainly would enjoy a gift of homemade dog biscuits at the holidays.

My own two dogs, Lulu and Sammy, each receive their "treat" every evening after that last trip outside. They know exactly where to find the cookie jar.

Homemade dog biscuits make sense as you control the ingredients, the size and shape, are all-natural, and less expensive than designer dog treats. And they are easy to make. Thanks go to my friend Donna for the recipe (mom to Annie and Lizzie).

So make a special batch for the dogs and dog-lovers in your life this holiday season.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

  • 2 cups of flour, any kind
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 T canola oil (or vegetable oil)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients and mix well.  Roll out the dough onto a floured surface to about 14 inches square.

Cut into any shape and size using a knife or cookie cutters. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes. Turn off the oven, but leave the pan of biscuits in the oven to dry. You can leave the pan in for several hours, or overnight.
