VIDEO: Matt's Mission Banner Hangs Above Route 80

Lynn Riordan hopes that the new banner on the Tilcon Bridge not only helps draw a crowd to the Matt's Mission 5K, but also encourages people to slow down.

On March 23, the Tilcon bridge on Route 80 near Central Plaza as a banner was hung by the (NHSC), which is based out of Northford.

Neither hanging the banner nor the process of gaining permission to hang the banner was a quick or easy process, but Peter Deyo of NHSC and of Matt's Mission made it possible.

Riordan explained that she has been working to get the banner hung for about a year–hiring lawyers, taking out extra insurance and calling in favors. She was more than excited to be on hand to see the banner promoting Matt's Mission 5K be hung for many reasons (see video) including promoting the race, reminding people to and honoring her son, , who died on May 23, 2009.

Deyo and his crew could not drill into the bridge so they installed brackets with clamps–seven sets of two–on the bridge. They then ran a cable through the brackets and tightened it. The entire process took about four hours.

The 6-foot by 36-foot banner was then clipped onto the cable and secured with Deyo noting that, in the future, adding or removing a banner will be as simple as unclipping or clipping it to the cable and take approximately an hour.
