North Branford Company Is First in New Hiring Program

The state's STEP program reimburses small businesses for hiring unemployed people.

A company, Engineering Specialties, to learn about a new joint venture product it made, is the first to sign on to a new state Department of Labor employment program.

An article by the New Haven Register said state Labor Commissioner Glenn Marshall visited Engineering Specialties to see how the new Step Up program was working. The Subsidized Training and Employment Program (STEP) provides reimbursements up to $12,500 for small businesses for hiring people who are unemployed and meet certain family income criteria.

Officials said 20 companies in the South Central Connecticut region have executed 39 Step Up agreements so far.
