Labor Day was originally created to appease unions after a 19th century railroad strike, but that’s doesn’t mean that modern working stiffs don’t get to reap the benefits of a day off. Here’s what’s open and closed throughout East Haven the rest of the state this week.
The following are CLOSED on Sept. 5 for Labor Day:
- Post offices
- Public schools
- Liquor stores (grocery stores also will not be selling beer)
- Government buildings, such as the Department of Motor Services
- Most banks
- Financial markets
The following will be OPEN on Sept. 5:

- Grocery stores
- Other businesses: open at the owner’s discretion
