Local Student Is Finalist for Highest Student Leader Award

T.J. McMahon a Class of 2015 North
Branford High School student was one of the twenty four student leaders across
the country who were the finalists for the Student Leader of the Year Award
sponsored by the prestigious Student Leadership Training Program.  T.J. was recognized for his contributions to
his school and to his community with a Student Leader of Merit Award as well as
a scholarship and special grant.  The
Student Leader of Merit Awards signify the highest level of commitment and
achievement.

                The
Student Leadership Training Program offers extensive training for high school
and collegiate student leaders and brings together student leaders from all
over the United States and Canada throughout the year and especially during the
summer months.  The program offers
seminars and conferences that are designed to increase self-understanding and
confidence; foster development of leadership skills; to improve communication
skills; and to define the role of student leaders.  It is a “hands-on” experience, as the student
leaders are involved in practical laboratory style experience.  The Coalition for the Advancement of Student
Activities sponsors SLTP and is a non-profit organization formed by student
activity advisers to develop leadership education.  The SLTP was founded in 1990 and since that
time, over 11,000 student leaders have attended the program.  The Student Leader of the Year Award and
Scholarship was initiated to recognize the efforts of students who are actively
engaged as differencemakers in their schools and communities.

                T.J.
was recommended for this award by Dr. Carter Welch who is the Assistant
Principal at North Branford High School and Mrs. Liberty Page who is a
chemistry teacher at North Branford High School.  Mrs. Page had this to say about T.J.’s Merit
Award: “On the first day of class I immediately recognized T.J. as a student
leader through his interactions with me and his peers because he showed the
utmost respect for what we do in our classroom and our school… He shows
integrity and responsibility.”
