Poll: Do You Choose the Healthy Menu Option at Fast Food Chains?

In an effort to help Americans eat healthier, many “fast food” restaurants have started offering so-called “healthy” menu options.

According to a survey last year by food research firm Technomic, 47 percent of Americans say they'd like restaurants to offer healthier items like salads and baked potatoes, yet only 23 percent tend to order those foods.

Patch wants to know: when you go to a restaurant such as McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts, or IHOP do you order from the “healthy” menu or do you go the burgers and fries and extra stack with more butter and syrup route?

For the past three months I've been on a diet that basically consists of grilled chicken from McDonalds and in that time have lost 28 pounds so it is very possible to eat healthy at fast food restaurants. Even the "non-healthy" fast food offerings aren't bad if eaten in moderation. But at this point I don't think I could stomach a fast food hamburger or fries. There's so much conflicting info out there -- just watch "Supersize Me," and then watch "Fat Head" and you'll see. In the end, the key to everything is moderation.

Losing weight does not necessarily mean you are eating healthy. A Macdonald's grilled chicken sandwich still has more fat and more cholesterol than a plain piece of grilled chicken you make yourself (putting nothing on it). The Macd's grilled chicken also has an incredible amount of sodium - about 1/3 of the recommended daily value.

Like a couple of others who have commented, I try to avoid fast food restaurants. I am sure what they are calling "healthy" is loaded with artificial chemicals. So what is low in calories is more than likely high in other things that aren't good for you.

I remember getting change back from a dollar for a burger, fries, and a drink (soda - not milk). I'm too old to go to a fast food place for "healthy".

I don't eat fast food often (once or twice a month), but when I do, I don't eat the healthy food. I try and eat healthy (veggie and fruit often) the rest of the month.
