"Growing" Need

The U.S. has more and more people partaking in the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or food stamp program) than ever before and the percentage of households in which at least one person is earning wages accounts for a large portion of those numbers. The above story looks at how sustainable the SNAP program is or isn't.

I personally like that the government not only offers food to those needing help but also gives people the option to purchase plants and seeds to grow their own. I think tax breaks or stimulus packages should be given to people who maintain gardens that can produce enough for their families and possibly some neighbors. Not quite a farm – just this new concept I like to call “sharing.” Ever notice that rhymes with caring? Of course, it also rhymes with flaring.

Once a Liar, Always a Liar?

The Dominique Strauss-Khan case could see all charges dropped based on the credibility of the woman, Nafissatou Diallo, filing sexual assault charges against the former head of the International Monetary Fund.

So Diallo lied on her immigration paperwork and has spoken with the press. Clearly she can't be a victim to any crime; she gave up the right to be a victim. Raise your hand when this line of thinking starts to sound like nonsense.

Does Color Still Matter?

The Martin Luther King, Jr memorial is revealed and brings visitors to tears.

I'm happy this exists and I will definitely go see it the next time I'm in Washington, D.C. – 's work deserves to be memorialized. What bothers me about this report is that there is a breakdown of percentage of interest in the monument by color: how many blacks would go see it, how many whites are mildly interested. Really? You couldn't just do a how many people are interested by age group or something? Can we seriously move past what color people are and focus on what people say and do?

Please Don't Entertain Me

HP reduces its touch pad prices and they are flying off the shelves.

Good – maybe they'll stop running that commercial with girl singing “Let me entertain you” because every time I hear it, I want to chew glass to distract myself from the agony of her pitch.

Cooking is Old School

Research now shows that humans began cooking about 1.9 million years ago (based on chewing wear markers in teeth, among other things), but have yet to discover earthenware or fire pit evidence.

I fail to see how excessive chewing suggests we were cooking. Maybe we switched to rocks. I'm fascinated by how eating developed. At what point did humans watch a bird break open a clam and follow their lead and stare at the little bowl of snot inside the shell and say, “Yeah, that looks perfect?” Were we able to eat raw meat at one point with no problem? Did our stomachs filter out the ickies like other animals are able to do? Of course, now we call it carpaccio. As for not finding any fire evidence, maybe they cooked it sous vide style.
