Burglars Targeting Motorized Equipment in North Branford

Police alert residents to a rash of burglaries and offer tips to protect your property.

A rash of out-building and garage burglaries in North Branford has led police to issue tips on how to protect personal property.

The most recent burglaries occurred during late night hours on April 17 to early morning hours on April 18 on Village Street in the Northford section of town. At least six residential sheds and/or garages were entered with force or through unlocked doors, police said. The items being targeted are motorized power equipment, dirt bike motorcycles and ATVs.

Tips to Protect Property

Residents are being advised to install motion sensor lights around their homes and make sure their garages and out-buildings are properly secured. It is also recommended that any power equipment, motorcycles and ATVs be locked or secured as well.

The police department also urges residents to be mindful of any activity that is out of the ordinary and to call the police department immediately to report such activity.

"Officers are doing their best to be proactive and be visible to any possible violators but we need the assistance of the community to be completely effective," police said in a press release. "If you see anything that you feel is suspicious, please try to obtain the best description you can in a safe manner and call the police department immediately at 203-484-2703 or, in case of emergency, utilize 911."

Wouldn't it be a better idea to list criminal complaints or reports on an at least weekly basis than to list arrests? At least that way the public would be aware of crime sprees and targeted neighborhoods much more quickly. I subscribe to the local paper of my future retirement community in Tennessee, and ALL criminal complaints are printed. You get a much better picture of the crime trends that way and I find it very helpful to know which neighborhoods, store parking lots, etc are being targeted by thieves, drug addicts, and so on.
