Fireboat to Be Refurbished as Eagle Scout Project

Ryan Murphy's Eagle Scout project of refurbishing the North Branford Fire Department's fireboat was approved.

At the Jan. 22 North Branford Town Council meeting, Eagle Scout candidate Ryan Murphy presented his project to the Council – refurbishing North Branford Fire Department Company 1's fireboat, which is a small rowboat with a motor.

Murphy, who is a senior patrol leader of his troop and a junior at the fire department, had already received the Fire Commission and NBFD's blessing with the project.

"With my Eagle Scout project, I wanted to give back to the town in big way and I went to the fire department first," he said. "The boat is not in the best of condition – the paint is chipping, the boards inside aren’t really good, but it does run. My goal is to make it more efficient for firefighters to use in case of a water emergency."

In addition to repainting the boat and fixing the damaged boards, Murphy plans to add a cabinet for equipment storage, install spotlights for nighttime rescues and purchase a cover.
