New Radar Guns Out in Full Force for North Branford Police Department

The NBPD has two new permanently mounted radar detectors thanks to Matt's Mission.

On Aug. 1, Lynn Riordan of presented the North Branford Police Department with a to be used for the purchase of two permanently mounted radar detectors for the patrol cars.

Riordan started Matt’s Mission in memory of her son, , who died in a speeding accident on May 23, 2009.

“I have a lot of energy so I could spend a lot of time being sad, which I am, but I turn it around and do something positive with it because sitting around and crying all day long is not going to do any good,” said Riordan on Aug. 1.

The new radar guns went into service on Sept. 12. In the time since they have gone into effect, the NBPD has issued 13 citations for traveling unreasonably fast and two for speeding. Traveling unreasonably fast is issued when vehicles are traveling above the speed limit but less than 60 miles per hour; speeding is cited for traveling in excess of 60 miles per hour.

“The new radar guns are out and working,” said Lieutenant David D’Ancicco. “The new devices better clock vehicle speed so it’s definitely a contributing factor.”
