North Branford Police Officers: Chief Matthew Canelli Intimidated Us

The North Branford Board of Police Commissioners is currently reviewing a grievance filed by two police officers that allege that their chief was profane, intimidating and threatening to them.

The North Branford Board of Police Commissioners have been meeting in recent weeks behind closed doors to resolve a grievance filed by two police officers against Police Chief Matthew Canelli.

The two officers - Lt. David D'Ancicco and Sgt. Sean Anderson - allege that Canelli was profane and intimidating to them on March 4, and then that Canelli threatened D'Ancicco on March 14, according to the New Haven Register. The police officers, the chief, the police union and town officials all refused to comment further on the allegations, saying they are not allowed to discuss the matter publicly, according to the Register.

The police commission will most likely make some ruling on the grievance, and then the union can either accept that ruling or go to the state labor board, according to the New Haven Register. Canelli has been a North Branford police officer since 1970 and has been chief since 1984, according to the Register.

In 2011, the Board of Police Commissioners said Canelli "acted appropriately" after a similar grievance by a police officer was filed against him.
