Campaign Notebook: 5th District Ad Standoff

Daily news and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy’s campaign is spinning a gaffe from oppenent Susan Bysiewicz’ camp into a call for donations. The ad, which Murphy's campaign staff said was based on the record of former New York congressman Scott Murphy and not the Connecticut congressman, is still running.

“They refuse to take it off the air. Outrageous, right?,” wrote campaign manager Kenny Curran in an email to supporters. “Given our opponent's unfortunate refusal to take her ad off the air, we need to increase our televison [sic] buys this week.”

On the Republican side the Senate race, Chris Shays told the New Haven Register editorial board that he would not support Linda McMahon if she wins the primary.

If there was any doubt of his true feelings, he sharply criticized her campaign, which refuses to meet with newspaper editorial boards.

“You have a candidate who is basically giving the finger to all the editorial boards,” Shays told the New Haven Register.

Fifth District

Elizabeth Etsy (D) released her second campaign ad, which can be seen on YouTube.

Mark Greenberg (R): Columnist Rick Green, of the Hartford Courant, says Greenberg is, “the stealth candidate to watch in the race for the Republican nomination in the 5th Congressional District.”
