Meeting Notes from Feb. 21 Town Council Meeting

Here's the round-up of what happened at the most recent Town Council meeting.

In addition to hearing concerns on the , a presentation from Nafis and Young on the  and , the Town Council also discussed the following issues at the at .

STW Project

North Branford received $200,000 of the $500,00 requested in STEAP grants in 2010 and none in 2011. Of the $200,000, an estimated $175,000 is earmarked for the HVAC work for work on .

represented the Permanent Project Building Committee (PPBC) and reported the architect made a list of other items to be completed using the remaining $25,000, which then pared down to only necessities.

“The next step is meeting with representatives from the and the , since they’ll be the ones moving in, to be sure we didn’t miss any critical items,” said Rose. “Then we will present to the Town Council requesting additional funds.”

Trash Collection Contract

North Branford’s collection contract expires this June, as does the contract for disposal so the Hazardous Waste and Recycling Committee and Solid Waste Committee are looking into options for the town.

Branigan reported that the HazWaste Committee discussed reviewing recycling policies with the schools as 15 percent of the town’s waste stream, accounting for approximately $75,000 annually, comes from the schools.

Branigan will meet with Superintendent Scott Schoonmaker prior to entering into new contracts. noted that he should be sure there are enough recycling receptacles at the schools.

said the Solid Waste Committee is looking at different ways to collect the town’s trash from single stream collection to container collection.

“We’re putting together estimates to see which way is best for the residents and the town,” said Doody.

NBIS

There was an inspection of the mechanical systems at North Branford Intermediate School with Bill Choti representing the school and representatives from Diversified Technologies.

“There were concerns about the installation of ductwork where the old building meets the new,” said Branigan. “Newman Architects has yet to react. There were clearly some omissions, some less than significant nature, but others may have caused some of the leaking.” 

Other Notes

  • The Council is preparing a list of seven nominees for the , which will be presented to the mayor.
  • was made liaison to the Police Commission.
  • The budget preparation meeting with the Police Commission and Fire Commission will be moved to March 24 from March 31 due to mandatory fire training scheduled for March 31.
  • Town Engineer Kurt Weiss is coordinating a meeting on the Route 80 widening project, scheduled for Feb. 29, with the DOT and members of .
  • Finals comments on the are expected shortly, which will be sent to the PPBC. There have been no leaks for about a month and a half.
