No School Monday, Feb. 11, as North Branford Digs Out

With lots of snow still covering the roads, North Branford schools are closed tomorrow. What roads have been plowed? Here's a list.

As North Branford digs out from the Blizzard of 2013, Public Works employees and contractors are hard at work restoring the town, but North Branford schools will be closed tomorrow. This snow day pushes North Branford past its allotted snow days and will take away Monday from April vacation.

In the meantime, there's a travel ban in North Branford until 6 p.m. as roads are cleared. On Facebook we asked if your road has been plowed. Here's the list so far according to North Branford Patch readers.

Holly Mar and Oxbow are being plowed now. Finishing up. :)
Rose February 10, 2013 at 07:59 PM
Jen, I checked the District website and the calendar states they will take from the end of April vacation beyond 6 snow days. This means there will be school on Friday, April 19.

Lasalette way is cleared

Thank you all for your patience with the clean up. Our staff has done a great job with the equipment they have and the limited amount of sleep. We still have a lot of work to do, but we will get there. Bonnie Therrien, Interim Town Manager

Our part of Marjorie Drive has not seen a plow since 9pm on Friday. It appears that parts of the neighborhood have been done but they forgot about the rest. A payloader went by yesterday so if we had a 4-wheel-drive big truck we could get out. All we need is just one pass with a plow to make a lane. Many of us need to get to work tomorrow and won't be able to.

Getting some great shout-outs on Facebook (facebook.com/northbranfordpatch) to the local families and farmers who have stepped up to help out, including: -Rachael Artaiz: "As we make a list of roads unclear please keep in mind that public works and our local farmers have been working around the clock to clear as many roads as possible." -Dorey Tilton: "Having driven from Hartford (work) to Guilford (drop off co-worker) to Northford, I was relieved that the Northford crews did such a great job!!!! Guilford was horrendous on route 80! I was happy to see North Branford and Northford so clear! Thank you!" -Sandy Callahan Cappello: "Edgewood! Thanks to the Witkowsky family with their pay loader and bobcat!" -Stephanie Bozzuto: "Thanks to AL ROSE from ROSES ORCHARD. He backhoed DeForest Drive. He's our angel!!!!"

And correction: the snow days will be taken from April vacation starting at the end of the week, not the beginning.

Via FB from Michele Foschini "I would just like to say thank you to the first responders and public works in this fine town, they have all worked so very hard this weekend and I want them to know they are very much appreciated."
Dominic Viscuso February 11, 2013 at 01:59 AM
Harrison Road is open still needs cleaning up.
Patricia February 11, 2013 at 05:52 AM
Thanks to all of the people helping especially all of the people who the town has hired who live in this town . talk about a community coming together. not just first responders but everyone that is helping clear out the town with their machines! =)

North Branford is the best town in Connecticut for traveling through after a snowstorm. The roads are usually plowed down to the pavement. Take a trip around through other towns in the New Haven county, and you will come back to our town. Thanks to our public work crews, local farmers, first responders, local contractors, and others that help out after a large blizzard. North Branford be Patient, we will survive to the next blizzard or hurricane because we are a volunteering and a caring community.
Sara Querfeld February 11, 2013 at 01:01 PM
Thank you to our Town crew, Fire Dept, Police, and everyone else helping in the cleanup effort! Our roads ar in far better shape than the area towns, just travel route 80 toward Guilford and you will see the difference. Your efforts are much appreciated!

Another comment from FB: Dave DiMartino posted to North Branford Patch: "Big shout out to our town public works crew. I know that this storm has been a tough one clean up. They arrived today a did a Great job on Cedar Ln. And the rest of our neighborhood. Just wanted to get this out there. I had seen to many posts that were complaints."

The homeowners - we dug a path out of.each others driveways and a one lane to the end of our block to have a bucket truck break down in the path, then have to town plow so much snow into our driveway, we are stuck again. We understand town employees plow, but when you see people helping to get rid of the snow, show some compassion and lift or turn the plow away from our driveways. None of us called the town AMD have them.rush to.plow us, we took it upon ourselves to be proactive. Now our entire neighborhood is appalled that the plow driver seen.all of us out shovelling and pushed the snow into driveway right in front of us. We had our driveways and roads safe and town undid everything we spent hours tp accomplish. Appalled!!
Michael Franco February 11, 2013 at 02:12 PM
Glenmeadow Drive has been plowed with one lane only, still needs a lot of work to be done. I thought the plows would be out all night Friday into Saturday morning to keep up with storm, but I was wrong. Tried calling the Emergency Call Center on Sunday morning (all four numbers) no phones were answered, finally I called the Police Department to get info, which was very helpful. So much for the Center.
Bonnie Therrien February 11, 2013 at 02:36 PM
Mr. Franco - The Public Works crew will be back to start opening up the roads wider. The plows were out on Friday night into Saturday AM, until they started getting stuck in the snow during the peak of the storm. We then took them off of the road so they were not damaged, as we knew we could not keep up with the snowfall amounts. They resumed on Sunday AM. This also allowed the staff to get a few hours sleep. The Emergency Call Center was manned late morning, so I do apologize if your call went unanswered. Bonnie Therrien, Interim Town Manager

I still don't understand why we have had ZERO emergency notification calls from the town of North Branford, throughout the entire event, and no explanation as to why.
Bonnie Therrien February 11, 2013 at 02:47 PM
Mr. Viscuso - The crews are working on pushing back the snow today. This will continue throughout the week. Bonnie Therrien, Interim Town Manager

S: This is from the latest update (http://northbranford.patch.com/articles/monday-feb-11-blizzard-update-for-north-branford): "We know that people were upset about the lack of phone calls over the weekend using the Reverse 911 system. We were not aware until yesterday, that the system was not working correctly. The system we use is owned by the State so I did report this to the State and we are working on correcting this."
