The total state employees laid off is now 1,851.

According to by Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy, the layoffs were a last resort to close a $1.6 billion budget deficit - a move made only after state labor unions voted to turn down a deal presented by Malloy, a Democrat in his first term.

The reduction in the state's 46,290 employee workforce is expected to continue and could top more than 6,500. But a vote Tuesday by labor unions that changed their bylaws could lead to a possible deal with the state before additional layoff notices are sent out.
