Who Won the Vice-Presidential Debate?

Paul Ryan and Joe Biden debated on Thursday night in Kentucky, and participants in Patch’s statewide live blog in Connecticut offered some pointed observations.

Often acting as surrogates for their running mates, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan squared off on international affairs, taxes and abortion, among other topics, in the only vice-presidential debate of the election season.

The candidates found little to agree on, whether it was a military withdrawal from Afghanistan, raising taxes and reforming entitlement programs. As expected, both sides spun the debate performances as victories.

One clear winner appeared to be widely-praised moderator Martha Raddatz, yet she did receive some criticism from conservatives.

Patch ran a statewide live blog that attracted upwards of 40 participants who offered their thoughts on the debate. Here are some of their reactions.

It's a toss-up. Biden: overconfident "I'm the voice of experience." Ryan: far-too-smiley equanimity.

John Flanagan:

Fortunately, or unfortunately, to the benefit of whichever VP candidate is deemed tomorrow, by the talking heads, to have fared worse, the debate is scheduled in the midst of the Yankees/Orioles, A's/Giants baseball playoffs and the Thursday night Steelers/Titans football games.

I was a little underwhelmed by this debate, but...full disclosure, I was a little distracted so it might be better when I rewatch it from the start.

Biden is a mouthpiece, an empty suit.

"Sometimes the words do not come out of your mouth the right way [said by Ryan to Biden]" will be the quote for the 2012 debate.

I love Biden's Passion.

Biden just nailed him on being a hypocrite about that stimulus.

Ryan is calm, cool, and collected. Biden is angry and looks like a fool.

Archie Bunker III

Ryan, the phony also said he RAN a marathon in under 3 hours, when in REALITY-VILLE, it was OVER 4 HOURS. A completely scummy lie, FOR SURE! I ran 15 marathons more than 30 years ago and have NO problem remembering the times.

Who do you think won the debate? Tell us in the comments!

Biden acted like your crazy old uncle at thanksgiving. He looked almost maniacal at times.
Dianna Pop October 12, 2012 at 04:59 PM
Biden's answered seemed more constructed and informed, so if there was a "winner" it would be him. A couple of times Ryan was taking some kind of notes; his grocery list maybe? Peanut butter, bananas, grapes (looks thoughtful...grapes? Do I like grapes? hmmm).

lol, were the two, Romney and Biden, to either run together or opposed, we might have an ego war on our hands, rather than the trifling distractions of foreign events to fuss over. god help us, if these types ever have face to face negotiations with some of the european hard liners.

this debate should be reduced to simple arm wrestling match. our foreign strongmen would respect them more than this attempt of vain ego assaults. don't think those over in those countries aren't evaluating these mooks for every last weakness they can use against them? be sure, this (and other 'debates') may be a local dog and pony show to entertain and gain the most votes here, but it demonstrates how very 'unclear' our soon to be leaders thinking process's are. just scary as hell.

The rethuglicans vile attempts to pathologize free speech and activism have been noted. Can't beat your opponent? Call him crazy or brash, or argumentative. Geez! Biden trounced Ryan, and all the republicans can do is bellyache about his bad manners. How rude of Biden to correct Ryan's lies and embarass the republicans on national television!

You know what really scares the heck out of me? Many people here have different opinions on the debates, the participants, etc, but reading comments throughout the internet, there are SO MANY people out there that have NO CLUE on the issues and/or the candidates that plan on voting for a candidate based solely on non political/security/economic issues. This ignorant group (not meant to belittle, but to use the word correctly) can have a pretty large 'swing' effect in this election.
Daria Novak October 12, 2012 at 09:13 PM
Why don't you use your real name Mimic? I do even though I get attacked & called names by the Demcorats. I do so because someone has to have the strength of character to say what they believe. If you're intimating I'm several people on this site, you are incorrect. I write under my name. The Democrats/liberals who disagree with me don't seem to like it that someone has a different view. Look at how they resort to name-calling. The Patch is trying hard to do a community service by providing a place for people to express their opinions. We don't need to agree, but we should be respectful. Often those on the losing side of an argument resort to name-calling from what I have seen here. Let's raise the level of discourse. Those who write phrases such as below show their ignorance & intolerance of those who have different political opinoins. "GOP cell at the Madison loony bin" "Daria has invented several personalities to try to fool us" (nope - just me) Liberals and conservatives have an equal right to their opinions on this site. It is called free speech. We can learn from each other if you stop the name-calling and bashing those who disagree with you. Can anyone tell me why the liberals on this site are too scared to allow conservatives to express an opinion without making disparaging remarks? Those are the tool of the closed minded and those afraid to hold an open discussion. I'm constantly reaching out. Conservatives believe in free speech and are here to stay.

Biden looked like the fool he his. But then again, look who he has to follow? This "team" needs to go, unless we all like living in poverty, because that is where these fools are taking us. They both looked like clueless idiots in their respective debates. All I can say is..."oh boy, are we in trouble"...

Reporters at today's briefing in Washington tried to get the White House Spokesman to explain why Biden claimed the Administration didn't know even 5 days after the attack, that the assassination in Libya was terrorism. The White House couldn't, or refused, to answer. The State Dept. publicly came out and said it was terrorism long ago. They admitted there are intel memos prior to the attack warning the Administration about it. The Embassy in writing requested additional security personnel and were turned down by the Administration. In fact, Washingotn reduced the security staff in Libya! Many pundits on TV are saying it is because the President wants to campaign claiming to have ended the war on terrorism and Libya is an inconvenient fact. Intel reports say Al Qaeda is growing in Libya, it is not dead or weakened. This makes the Administration look weak and like it is hiding the truth. I don't care what party the President belongs to, we the American people deserve the truth. Voters are not stupid. BTW - Ryan did give a lot of specifics. Go back to the transcript and re-read it. I don't really think this debate changed anyone's opinion much. So, the Vice President can make a faces and is bold at interrupting his opponent, that doens't make him a good leader. Rep. Ryan finally had to ask him to stop interrupting. I am not sure many politicians would have had the grace that Paul Ryan exhibited toward the VP in a simliar circumstance. He was a class act.
Daria Novak October 12, 2012 at 09:33 PM
These are serious times. Why disparage a man running for high public office, Vice President of the United States? Why not contribute constructively here, even if you don't agree with some of the other posts. Let's learn from each other's views. After November we need to come together as Americans and work in unison to fix what is broken in our nation.

B_W Here's a great article to read: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/history_lesson/2008/08/the_write_stuff.single.html#pagebreak_anchor_2 It discusses just a few of his lies, etc. over the years....before last night, that is. Also, you might want to check VPOTUS's vote to overturn Roe v Wade, his votes for the Iraq War, etc. Beyond that, sounds like he should have been tossed out of law school for cheating/plagiarizing..he's got quite a record of that, actually. If he wasn't suitable for POTUS back then, why should anyone want him a heartbeat away NOW? And the only person he ever embarrasses is HIMSELF.
Steve Bristol October 12, 2012 at 09:59 PM
Beverage Guy What should really scare you are the ongoing fiscal policies of the Fed and the current administration. Many have spoken about it but here is a an article that explains it pretty thoroughly and simply. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2012/10/11/the_economic_case_for_romney-ryan_115748-2.html Steve

At first I wanted to slap the smirks off Biden's face, but then I realized that my prayers had been answered.  I had prayed that he would reveal himself to the voters for what he really is; and that is exactly what Joe was doing with his inappropriate laughter (when a disastrous economy and murders of Americans in Libya were being discussed!), rude and constant interruptions of Ryan, and angry, snide and condescending, if not outright mean, treatment of his debate opponent. The thing is, Dems believe Joe won the debate, but he may have helped them lose the election.  His anger and rude, condescending behavior, treating opponents with total disdain, and absolute COLDNESS to real human economic suffering--let alone to the needless slaughter of 4 Americans in Benghazi--perfectly epitomize exactly what the Democratic party of today has become. In stark contrast, Paul Ryan was calm and respectful, even-tempered and even Presidential in bearing.  All but the most diehard hateful dyed-in-the-wool Dems saw that, and the Romney/Ryan "Comeback Team" definitely won this one with the Independents, whom this election depends upon! Romney/Ryan are now WINNING Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia, with Obama only a sure thing in 7 states!!

Clemson Tiger Great Article. Had to speed read it but will go back to it again. Kind of along the lines of what I was thinking but I tried to make my comment so it can be viewed by either side in hopes (highly unlikely) that more people would educate themselves on the issues rather than vote for a candidate because 'that is what they were told' and many other such reasons that I do not feel the need to list as seems many here probably know some of the lame reasons people choose a candidate.

Oops, typing and not fully paying attention as my thoughts were rolling. Sorry for the obvious run on sentence,

Biden came off as a "good ole boy" from the Guys Club. He obviously can't run on OB's record. Dumb statements like: I guess the stimulus " projects weren't Not quite shovel ready"; "we have to read the OB Care bill to find out what is in it"; (botox Pelosi) the bribery of certain Senators and Congress members to get their OBCARE vote; the Solyndra waste of money fiasco. Unemployment over 8% .Apologizing for the US around the world? Michelle saying she was never proud of her country?? His AG saying the "voting act is not for the protection of white people? Can anyone with a half of a brain even think of voting for this lunatic Democratic team? All you need to do is to listen to Steve Wynn's comments last night on OB and how he is killing the "job makers". When is enough enough? If this Socialist is elected we will have a deep recession.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had two candidates who were SO GREAT that it would be difficult to choose? Instead of talking about which is worse than the other?

Biden is an ass. " Fight'n Joe " has to be fired. As VP of the US, he is PRESIDENT of the US Senate. Yes, this senate that has NOT passed a budget since April 29, 2009, which is 1,265 days ago, in direct violation of Article 1 of the US Constitution which requires the congress to pass an annual federal budget. As President of the Senate he should have held Harry Reid and Kent Conrad's feet to the fire to do the minimum of what they must do by law.....but NO! They had other political "considerations". I thought it was exceedingly ironic that Biden was criticizing GWB for two " unfunded wars ".....Biden voted for both! What a tool; what a fool. Seriously, what was GWB to do after 9/11? Have committee hearings and then decide who the bad guys are? Just how did that work in Iraq? The congress deliberated it for so long Saddam Hussein had enough time to transfer all the weapons of mass destruction across the border into Syria. Ooops Syria? It is in the congressional record that Bill and Hilary Clinton as well as John Kerry knew about the WMD in Iraq. I am close to 60 and wondering how in the world are we going to pay for the greedy, gluttonous leviathan that the federal government has become. Seriously, the federal government spends 1 TRILLION DOLLARS more that it takes in. It is time that the government learns how to live on less or it will be our kids and grandchildren paying off our debts. Check out this short YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuCaWYvpVZg

I live in a Shoreline, Democratically-controlled town. I was appalled that it took me 169 days and mucho dinero to get my gun permit through my town. In New Hampshire, the same process takes 7 days. So, DHHS Class of 1971, the leviathan is also on a much smaller government level. BTW, I watched the video and it was incredibly touching... thanks.

So white rich kids desecrating the American flag. DHHS you bring nothing to the table. Embaressing to me that you're a Hand graduate.
Yankee1 October 13, 2012 at 08:48 PM
dhhs great writing. I agree 100%. Anyone that votes for OB gets what they deserve. more layoffs and high unemployment etc. Most of the dopes who are voting do not know the issues or worse care to be informed. The motto of these people is "just give me my free stuff" as one said after OB was elected.

Hello Charles! Patch readers can always count on you to offer brilliant commentary. Apparently, you did not graduate from Hand. Your sentence structure and spelling are awful. Can I suggest that you call a proctologist? Your head appears to be stuck. Here is the toll free number for you: 1- 8 0 0 - L I B E R A L
Yankee1 October 13, 2012 at 11:58 PM
Hey Charles: You just set education at Hand back about 20 years with your spelling and sentence structure. I bet all of the English teachers at Hand are embarrassed by your writing ability. I still don't get the "white rich kids" in your lame comment. Whatever you do don't vote. Morons like you should not have the right to vote.

Of course Ryan one. It doesn't take a genius to see how phoney Biden is. And what a liar.
