Inadequate Recycling Resources For NB Schools

School officials met with the Hazardous Waste and Recycling Committee last month to mull it over.

The North Branford school system is currently lacking the neccesary resources to dispose of recycable waste properly.

School principals and Superintendent Scott Schoonmaker met with members from the Hazardous Waste and Recycling Committee last month to figure out ways to revamp an unsound recycling program.

“The goal of the meeting was to make sure that they were following the law,” committee member Daniel Armin said. “They all agreed that they were lacking the facilities to remove recyclable waste.”

At the meeting, committee member Hank Petroskey told school officials that in order to ensure compliance with the law, outdoor recycle bins at the schools need to be emptied on a more frequent basis, or more bins need to be supplied.

In response, school admins said that, although students are leading the way in the recycling effort, resources are still “insufficient.”

Another issue brought up between the two commission members and school officials was the dilemma of which recyclables mix, and which do not. Petroskey said there was an inability on the school’s part to decipher whether or not cardboard waste can be mixed with other types of recycle refuse.

He recommended color-coding the bins with lables like, “cardboard only,” to ensure correct disposal.

Petroskey also notified the school officials about an upcoming electronic- or e-waste day. Petroskey hopes to collect a large amount of e-waste, which includes old computers, VCRs, stereos, copiers, etc., from the schools in town.
