Indoor Track Teams Shatter More School Records at States

The North Branford T-Birds’ indoor track teams saw several highlights at the Class S State Championships.

On Feb. 10, the indoor track teams completed the at the Class S State Championship at the Floyd Little Track and Field Center, following success in the . Both the boys’ and girls’ teams scored in two events.

The girls’ team took two fourth-place finishes. Rachel Boyers took fourth in the 55 hurdles (9.44), while the 4x200 team of Natalie Baughan, Miranda Jassil, Jordan Miket and Katelyn Pantera was also fourth. The time of 1:55.24 broke the school record.

On the boys’ side, co-captain Robert Martino’s time of 6.69 was good for fifth in the 55-meter dash. The boys’ 4x800 team also broke a school record with a time of 8:44.93 with Bernie Cermola, Jason Conforte, Ryan Proto and co-captain Kevin Walker running.

The T-Birds had many other athletes who qualified for states, several in multiple events.

The boys’ 4x400 team of Matt Edwards, Cermola, Gary Falanga, and Proto placed ninth (3:42.5), while the 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Sean O’Connor, Bobby Miller, Alex Raffone and Andrew Sarmento came in 10th (4:09.55).

Rocco Morgan’s throw of 45-1 in the shot put was not only good for ninth place, but was also a personal best. Edwards finished 10th in the 600 (1:29.45) and Walker was 11th in the 1,000 (2:54.79). 

Other competitors for the boys’ team included Christian Perrotti, who was 16th in the 55 (7.01); Martino, who took 16th in the long jump (18-11); and Raffone, who finished 17th in the 300 (40.2).

The girls’ SMR team of Baughan, Jassil, Miket and co-captain Sarah Mc Donald came in 11th (4:58.99). In individual events, Boyers was 20th in the long jump (14-1 ¼), Jassil was 21st in the 300 (45.99) and co-captain Jessica Wharton placed 22nd in the shot put (26-8).
