Make-a-Wishers Give Big to Make-A-Wish Foundation

A trio of juniors at are using their love for children as inspiration for their run through the Student Council. Sarah Brenner, Ashley Distasio and Jana Ferraro chose to fundraise for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. 

According to the website, “the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work.”

All three members of the Make-a-Wishers have been involved in babysitting and caring for children.

“We want them to be safe and protected throughout their lives,” said Ferraro. “It’s important for them to have as many as many experiences as they can when they’re young. Make-a-Wish can give a sick child something like meeting someone famous or a big vacation and help them forget what has happened to them for a little while.”

Ferraro notes that granting the average ‘wish’ costs approximately $6,000 and while that is a lofty goal, she does hope the team can raise $500.

“Anything higher would be great,” said Ferraro. “We just want to impact a child’s wish.”

In order to reach their goal, the Make-a-Wishers are hosting two upcoming bake sales. The first will be at Wal-Mart in Guilford on Saturday, Feb. 4 and the second at Stop & Shop in Branford on Saturday, Feb. 11. Both will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Ferraro is excited to be a part of her as her teammates were both involved their freshman year. Though Ferraro didn’t join Student Council until last year, she remembers her sister taking part in the first Big Give.

“It’s one of the reasons I decided to join Student Council as a sophomore,” said Ferraro. “It’s important you take a step back and not just focus on your life, but on what you can for other people, help whoever you can and be selfless.”
