Two North Branford High School fall teams earned a spot in the state tournament with the undefeated football team also poised for a postseason run after its two remaining games. The boys' soccer team and field hockey team earned a berth in states with both bowing out in recent action.
The field hockey team finished the regular season at 10-4-2 record to earn the No. 8 seed in the tournament. North Branford was slated to host ninth-seeded Westbrook in the first round, but snow on the field forced the game to be moved to Westbrook.
Despite the change in location, the T-Birds still came up with a 2-0 win over the Knights on Nov. 9. The victory earned North Branford a trip to the quarterfinals two days later.
The first-round win also pitted North Branford against the top seed in Class S – Lauralton Hall, which finished the regular season with a 13-0-2 record and a 4-0 first-round win over Killingly, the No. 16 seed. Lauralton Hall took a 2-0 win to end North Branford's 2012 season.
In boys' soccer action, the 8-6-2 T-Birds took the No. 15 seed in Class S rankings to match up against 18th-seeded Wamogo in the first round. The teams had identical regular season records with North Branford holding the advantage on tiebreakers for the higher seed and home field advantage.
Despite being the home team, North Branford was forced to play at Guilford High School after Athena dumped a layer of snow on the fields. The teams battled through regulation and two overtimes with Wamogo eventually coming up with the game-winner for a 2-1 victory.
