North Branford Girls’ Lacrosse Still Alive in States

The T-Birds are putting in solid postseason performances.

The North Branford High School is still playing in the state tournament with a game this afternoon. The baseball team and girls' outdoor track team finished their seasons in fine fashion.

Lacrosse

The girls’ lacrosse team finished the regular season with a 12-4 record to earn the No. 4 seed in the Division S State Tournament. The T-Birds opened with a 14-10 victory over Old Lyme (6-9), the No. 13 seed.

The win puts North Branford in the quarterfinals today at 5 p.m. The T-Birds will host Weston (12-5), the No. 5 seed. If North Branford wins today, it could face a familiar foe in HK, which–with a 15-1 regular-season record including two wins –took the No. 1 seed and plays eighth-seeded Immaculate in the quarterfinals today.

The North Branford baseball team’s solid season ended in the quarterfinals of the state tournament when the third-seeded T-Birds were upset by No. 22 Seymour 3-1 on June 4.

North Branford finished the 2011 season with a regular season with a 16-4 record, while Seymour held an 11-8 regular-season record. The T-Birds’ run through the Class M State Tournament included a 2-1 win over 30th-seeded East Haven and an 11-2 victory over No. 14 seed Granby Memorial. North Branford also competed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament, falling in the .

Girls’ Track

The North Branford girls’ track team competed in the Class S State Championship on June 2 at Veteran’s Stadium in New Britain. The T-Birds scored three points for 30th place in the 34-team field.

Stephanie Torniero was the top finisher for North Branford on the day as she finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 93-0.

Other competitors included Alyssa Arre, who placed 13th in the 800 (2:35.7); Jessica Wharton, whose throw of 27-10 ¾ was good for 18th place and 62-2 gave her 24th in the javelin; Sarah McDonald, who was 26th in the 3,200 (13:05.64); and Rachel Boyers, who took 27th in the 300 hurdles (54.35).
