North Branford High School Sports Round-Up

Here are some scores from the T-Birds' recent action.

The T-Birds' fall season is in full swing despite rain putting a damper on some recent games, raining out girls' soccer and field hockey last Friday, which are both currently unbeaten, while the football team took its first win of the season with a on Sept. 23.

Girls' Soccer

Rick Geremia's girls' soccer team is still undefeated after recently going 1-0-1, topping Old Saybrook 1-0 on Sept. 21 and then tying Cromwell on Sept. 26 to stand at 4-0-1.

Against Old Saybrook, the Rams outshot the T-Birds 8-7, but North Branford goalkeepers Katelyn Pantera (5) and Stephanie Torniero (3) combined for the shutout. Sam Stowe scored the T-Birds' lone goal, netting a shot in the first half off an assist from .

Cromwell startled North Branford with a quick first-half goal just 50 seconds into the game. Anderson evened the score 15:01 into the game, but neither team could score again despite North Branford outshooting Cromwell 22-12. Pantera had eight saves for the T-Birds.

North Branford next plays Shoreline Conference rival Morgan in a contest on Monday, Oct. 3 at 3:45 p.m.

Field Hockey

The North Branford continued to pour in the goals en route to holding an undefeated 6-0 record. The T-Birds started with a 6-0 home win over Old Saybrook on Sept. 20. The T-Birds then squeaked by cross-town rival Branford with a 1-0 win on the Hornets' field.

On Sept. 26, Coach Babby Nuhn's squad took another 6-0 victory, this time at Valley Regional. North Branford then gave up its only goal so far this season to Shoreline Conference foe HK. The T-Birds, though, were one better, taking a 2-1 road win. 

North Branford is in action again on Tuesday, Oct. 4 when the T-Birds travel to Westbrook for a 3:45 p.m.

Boys' Soccer

The T-Birds’ boys’ soccer team stands at 0-5-1 so far in 2011, but despite the record, the both the varsity and JV team are making shots count for a fundraiser for a  teammate’s family after his father was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Both the JV and varsity team are accepting pledges for Shots for a Cause. Click  for info.

On Sept. 20, North Branford dropped a 2-0 decision to Coginchaug before falling 2-1 to Old Saybrook on the road two days later. The T-Birds lost 4-0 to Old Lyme on Sept. 24 and then were edged 3-2 by Cromwell on Sept. 27.

The T-Birds host HK tonight, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m.

Volleyball

The T-Birds' volleyball team stands at 1-6 under . Yesterday, Sept. 29, North Branford earned its first win of 2011 by topping Hyde Leadership 3-2 in a home contest. Prior to the win, North Branford recently dropped 3-0 decisions to HK on Sept. 21, East Hampton on Sept. 22 and Coginchaug on Sept. 26.

The T-Birds take on Shoreline Conference foe Morgan today, Sept. 30, at home at 5:30 p.m.

Cross-Country
