North Branford Superintendent’s Report: June

Scott Schoonmaker went over the following items in the Superintendent’s Report at the June 14 Board of Education meeting:

Major roles at the Class of 2012 graduation were held by valedictorian , salutatorian , essayist and Class President is , who “represent our best and brightest,” according to Schoonmaker.

Schoonmaker also said he was “very pleased” with the Class of 2012’s post-high school plans as 83 percent of graduates plan on attending a four-year college with seven students heading to the military, six joining the workforce, five returning on the extended special needs program and six still deciding.

“There are some big schools these kids are going to,” said BOE Chair Marcey Onofrio. “The kids are encouraged to do a reach school and there were not a lot of denials.”

Shannon Miscio, BOE vice chair, noted that of those headed to college, 44 percent were accepted to schools in the ‘highly competitive’ category.

Schoonmaker also reported that the North Branford High School Interact Club was awarded the District Interact Club Community Service Project Award based on the community service provided by the club’s members and the donations to the , and the Branford Community Dining Hall.

Joseph Tenczar, club advisor, and , agricultural program manager, were on hand to accept the award (see photo) on behalf of the Interact Club members.

“Lori has the greenest of green thumbs,” said Tenczar. “She’s out there every day and all the attention should be given to her to make this concept (greenhouse) I had three years ago really work.”

The superintendent also shared a letter from the Shoreline Math Department Heads reporting that North Branford High School junior Stephen Furr was the recipient of the “Outstanding Junior in Mathematics Award.”
