After a season-opening , the T-Birds have been perfect, heading into the game against Cromwell last Friday, Oct. 28, with a 4-1 record. Cromwell entered the contest with a perfect 6-0 record, making it a battle.
The T-Birds jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead before Cromwell scored to cut it to 14-7 after the first quarter. Joe DeLucia’s 54-yard run opened North Branford’s scoring before Dale Hausman ran a TD in 14 yards. Cromwell took advantage of an interception to make it 14-7.
Cromwell came back in the second with two short runs for touchdowns to take its only lead of the game at 19-14.
North Branford quarterback Brandan Basil then showed off his passing game as he reclaimed the lead with a 28-yard TD pass to Delucia before halftime before opening the third quarter with a 28-yard pass to Hausman. Hausman then punched in a one-yard score to go up 35-19. Ryan Magnotti was perfect on point-after attempts, going 5-for-5 through the third quarter.
The visitors scored another touchdown and added a two-point conversion to cut it to 35-27 entering the final frame. Cromwell narrowed the gap to 35-33 in the fourth quarter, but Delucia added an insurance score with a three-yard run to finalize the game at 41-33 and put the first blemish on Cromwell’s record.
The T-Birds continued to put up impressive stats. Hausman had 19 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns to go with two receptions for 30 yards and a TD. Delucia’s three carries were good for 65 yards and two scores, while he also had a 24-yard touchdown reception. Basil was 6-for-17 passing for 94 yards and touchdowns and he had two interceptions. Basil also had six carries for 14 yards.
Other offensive contributors were Chris Caron (5 carries for 31 yards), Cory Onofrio (2 receptions for 24 yards), Gary Falanga (5 carries for 31 yards) and Magnotti (16-yard reception).
Caron was all over the place defensively, racking up five tackles, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Anthony Franco had nine tackles, John Burke had seven tackles and a sack, Damoy Hunter had six tackles, Delucia had five tackles, Steve Saunders had four tackles and a sack and Falanga had three tackles and a sack.
