T-Birds’ Volleyball Hopes for a Positive Season

Dick Terrill takes over the helm of the North Branford volleyball team with help from two former players; drops season-opener to HK.

Dick Terrill is no stranger to the North Branford girls’ volleyball program, having been an assistant coach for the past four year. This year, though, he is putting what he has learned under former coaches Debbie Stone and into play as he takes over head coaching duties.

“Meghan built a strong foundation last year and I am looking to build on that,” said Terrill. “I am also looking to continue the strong traditions that the two former coaches instilled in the team. As their assistant coach, they both have taught me a great deal!”

The familiarity continues with the assistant coaches as they are two former players. Caitlin Doyle, the assistant coach and JV coach, was a three-year varsity setter for the T-Birds, captaining the team her junior and senior year. She also earned Honorable Mention All-Shoreline. Ashley Silva, a volunteer coach, was a varsity outside hitter for three years, a captain her senior year and Second Team All-Shoreline her junior and senior year.

“The two of them bring to the team volleyball knowledge and skills, a strong work ethic and, most importantly, a love for the game and a desire to win,” said Terrill.

That desire will prove to be important this season as the T-Birds’ goals include “to improve on our skills, play good volleyball and improve on a ],” according to Terrill.

Terrill said that senior captains Julia Reis (back row and libero) and Kayla Stevens (middle and outside hitter) bring “leadership and a willingness to work extremely hard. They are the first ones on the court and the last ones off!”

While there are returning players, North Branford lost two key seniors prior to the season–one to an injury and one who did not return to the team so Terrill will be looking to younger players to step up.

In addition to the captains, Terrill will be counting on several other key returnees, including seniors Tori Ramada (setter, “excellent server”) and Meghan DeFrank (back row, “good passer”), sophomore Deanna Gallo (outside hitter, back row, “excellent server, passer and hitter; a great all-around player”) and junior Kayla Nowak (middle hitter, “excellent hitter, strong blocker and powerful server”).

The T-Birds are looking forward to games against Hyde, Cromwell, Valley and Coginchaug.

“We have some young players who will most definitely help this year's varsity squad and there will be some underclassmen playing key roles,” said Terrill. “The team has a positive outlook and a willingness to work hard and great senior leadership. This is a great group of girls and I am truly looking forward to working with them this season! Additionally, it is an honor to have two former players joining the coaching staff!”

Sept. 11: HK 3, North Branford 0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-11)

In the season-opener, Nowak had three blocks and three kills, Tori Ramada had eight assists, Allie Sanzari had five assists and Ashley Poston had two kills and one block.
