VIDEO: Reading Is Star of 'Read' Carpet Event at JHS

On March 2, students at Jerome Harrison Elementary School in North Branford were treated like celebrities as the celebrated Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Students across the country celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2 by participating in Read Across America–however, not all students got to celebrate by walking a 'read' carpet dressed in their best like those at .

The halls of the schools were decorated with movies posters and limousine cutouts and a big green curtain hung across the doors of the gymnasium. Students stepped through the curtain into JHS's version of Hollywood's Oscars.

The students and teachers, all dressed in their fanciest clothes, walked the 'read' carpet with paparazzi snapping photos. After passing under a small canopy, each class had a seat where a town celebrity read a book.

After hearing a story, the students moved beyond the divider where a large white tent with decorations fit for movie stars where they not only enjoyed fancy snacks prepared by room parents, but also the talents of violinist Jan Royce, who played popular children's tunes for each table.

There was another surprise just outside the gym doors–a huge party bus. The children climbed on board where they spent 15 minutes on the luxurious bus enjoying the reading materials they brought with them.
