Sen. Meyer Wins Top Rating for Protecting the Environment

State Sen. Ed Meyer (D-Guilford) earned the highest rating possible from the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters for his commitment to protecting the environment.

HARTFORD – State Sen. Ed Meyer (D-Guilford) was awarded the highest rating by the League of Conservation Voters for his role in passing legislation that promotes environmental stewardship and preservation.

The nonprofit pro-environment organization tracked 21 bills during the legislative session, including eight bills that were considered “hostile” to the environment and 13 bills considered “favorable to the environment.”

Of the legislation considered favorable, Sen. Meyer, who serves as Senate chairman of the General Assembly’s Environment Committee, led passage on several significant ones, including a comprehensive Coastal Management Bill and a new law to require the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to post information online about sewer spills.

“There is no question that keeping our air and water clean is important for public health,” Sen. Meyer said. “But I also believe that environmental stewardship plays a role in strengthening our economy. Connecticut’s natural resources drive ‘green’ jobs and tourism, which can in turn create jobs. Through my service in the Senate, I had made protecting the environment a priority, so I am honored to receive a top rating from such an eminent organization as the League of Conservation Voters.”

Sen. Meyer earned a score of 100 percent for his support of pro-environment legislation, including new laws that aim to reduce phosphorus in water and improve the state’s open space plan. Last year, the League proclaimed Sen. Meyer its “Green Knight”
