Giving North Branford Youth Something to Cheer About

Jessica Trenchard is the president of North Branford Youth Cheerleading.

Jessica Trenchard can’t spread enough cheer.

In addition to her already busy schedule, this working mother of two who is also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for Northford Company 3 Fire Department is also the president (i.e. coordinator!) of the North Branford Youth Cheerleading program. Jessica volunteered two years ago when the former program coordinator approached her and has been running the program ever since.

I caught up to Jessica at one of the twice-weekly youth cheer summer practices, which are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the .

“The girls have such a good time," said Trenchard. “They love the participation."

In addition to the summer practices, they cheer at the North Branford Youth football games, which are held every Sunday during the football season.

The North Branford Cheer Club also sponsors the opportunity for the cheerleader to head to Cheerleading Youth Camp where they learn the cheers and halftimes that the varsity cheerleaders learn during their own cheer camp. Spirit Night, which is held in October, allows them to cheer at a Friday night football game with the varsity squad and do a halftime cheer.

"It’s a great way to participate in a fun sport at a very early age," said Trenchard.

She was also very impressed by the commitment by the North Branford High School , who volunteer each year to coach the youth squads.

“You have to understand that the youth cheerleaders really look up to the high school coaches," said Trenchard. "They think the coaches are rock stars! I was so pleased that the high school cheerleading coach, , takes this very seriously. She told the varsity squad that if they were going to coach, they needed to really put their hearts into it because it means so much to the younger girls. The varsity coaches do a great job.”

The North Branford Youth Cheerleading program is open to children grades 3 to 8 who are residents of Northford/North Branford. Contact Jessica, jessica_ann76@att.net for more information on the program.
