The fall sports season is in full swing at North Branford High School. Here are some of the latest results in the world of North Branford T-Birds' sports.
Football
The North Branford football team took another big win, showcasing its powerhouse offense and stifling defense as the T-Birds topped Morgan 46-7. North Branford scored all 46 points in the first half, while the Huskies earned their lone touchdown in the third quarter.
The T-Birds got on the board with a three-yard TD by Gary Falanga and then added three more scores in the first quarter alone as Brandan Basil connected wtih Chris Caron on a 40-yard TD pass, Josh Melaccio had a 26-interception return and Basil then hit Alex McGuigan for a 22-yard score.
In the second quarter, Basil again found Caron, this time for a nine-yard TD. The senior captain quarterback closed out the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Joe Delucia. Delucia was 4-for-6 on point-after kicks.
Offensively, Dale Hausman led North Branford with 11 carries for 134 yards. Basil was 10-for-13 passing for 162 yards and four touchdowns to go with 21 rushing yards. Sophomore Eddie Miller saw some action, going 1-for-1 on his attempts.
Delucia had three rushes for 23 yards along with three receptions for 45 yards. Caron had four receptions for 89 yards.
Melaccio anchored the T-Birds' defensive line with eight tackles to go with his interception return. As a team, North Branford had 56 tackles. Other key defensive players were Falanga with seven tackles and a sack, Joe Ferreira with five and Cory Seymour, John Burke (who also had two sacks), Andrew Calamita and Christian Sgro (1 sack) with four tackles apiece. Adam Campagna added a sack, while Melaccio, Calamita and Steve Nardini each had an interception.

Cross-Country
The North Branford cross-country teams competed against Coginchaug, Cromwell, Haddam Killingworth, Morgan, and Valley Regional at the Shoreline Conference Large School Meet on Sept. 24 at Morgan High School in Clinton. The girls’ team lost to all the schools, while the boys’ team topped all but HK.
For the boys, the top finishers were Ryan Proto in 10th (18:56), Sean O’Connor (12th, 19:00), Jason Conforte (14th, 19:10), Zach Augur (22nd, 20:17), Chris Olsen (42nd, 21:58), Isaac Cammarata (45th, 22:04), Ben Boatman (61st, 24:19), Richard Hernandez (62nd, 24:20) and Jackson Myers (69th, 26:48).
Top finishers for the girls were Sydney Lane (25th, 27:14), Rachel Sauro (37th, 29:50), Megan Oakes (41st, 31:41), Jessica Munck (44th, 32:26), Taylor Krista (45th, 32:33), Jen Berube (46th, 33:03), Grace Carr (47th, 33:35) and Meghan McCarthy (49th, 34:40).
Volleyball
The T-Birds’ volleyball team fell to 1-5 in 2012 with a 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 21-25) loss to Valley on Sept. 28. The Warriors improved to 5-1.
For North Branford, Kayla Nowak had two blocks, two kills and an ace, while Julia Reis had two aces and eight digs. Deanna Gallo chipped in an ace, a kill and three digs.
Valley was led by Sierra Hargar with 14 attacks, five kills and two errors; along with Michriela Paholski with 10 hits, five kills and two errors.
North Branford got its second win of the season by topping Hyde 3-0 with three strong games, winning 25-5, 25-8, 25-7. Allie Sanzari had three assists and 16 aces, Nowak had three kills and five aces and Reis had three digs and seven aces.
