North Branford Girls' Basketball Stands at 2-3
The T-Birds are 2-3, already a quarter of the way through the 2012-13 season.
The North Branford girls’ basketball team returns in 2012-13 under longtime Coach Chris Webster with goals of qualifying for both the Shoreline Conference and state tournaments. So far, the T-Birds are 2-3 with 15 more games to play in the regular season (full schedule below, courtesy of the CIAC).
Senior captains Ashley Arre, Emily DeSorbo and Jenny Sabetta will lead the squad. In addition to the captains, Webster is counting on big contributions from Justine Johnson, Melissa Sola and Deidre DiMaggio, along with freshman Sabrina LeMere, who has earned a starting spot.

Aside from a 58-19 loss to Morgan on Dec. 11, the 2012-13 season has proved to be a competitive one with close-scoring games. North Branford opened the season with a 50-47 loss to Hale-Ray on Dec. 5. Arre led the team with 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Sabetta added nine rebounds and three points. In the scoring department, LeMere led the team with 11 followed by Johnson with 10 and DiMaggio with eight.
“The Lady T-Birds played a great first half last night but ended up losing to Hale-Ray,” said Webster, whose JV team took a 30-26 win with a balanced scoring attack. “Thanks to all of our supporters who came out.”
Three days later, North Branford came out on top of a close game, taking a 63-59 win over Hyde. Sabetta recorded her first double-double, leading the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds. LeMere added 15 points and five assists.
“The girls were able to pull off the victory despite three starters fouling out,” said Webster, who again thanked the fans for their support. “It was a great team effort.”
On Dec. 14, North Branford dropped a 53-50 game to Westbrook in a back-and-forth contest. Sabetta and Johnson each had 13 points to lead the T-Birds with both scoring 10 in the second half.
“Jenny hit two three-pointers in the fourth quarter, including one with about 11 seconds left in the game to tie the score, said Webster. “Then a Westbrook player was fouled and scored [for the win].”
LeMere added 11 points and has a team-leading four assists, while Sola had nine points, three assists and two steals.
North Branford earned its second win of the season with a 45-32 victory over Old Lyme. LeMere led the T-Birds in scoring with a career-high 16 points and in steals with four. Sabetta added 10 points and six rebounds and Arre led the team with seven rebounds. She also added two steals and two assists.
DeSorbo had seven points and six rebounds, while Johnson contributed six points, three rebounds and two assists. DiMaggio led the team with three assists and also had two steals.
“All seven players scored in the crucial fourth quarter when North Branford outscored Old Lyme by a 17-8 margin,” said Webster.
