North Branford Little League celebrates Opening Day.

North Branford Little League (NBLL) held its opening day ceremony at Edward Wall Memorial Field this past Saturday morning. Despite a damp chill in the air, spirits were high and the 2011 season got underway.

The teams marched to Wall Field in a small parade before the introduction of each sponsored team kicked off the event. A prayer for protection was said for the teams. Allisa Hoyt sang a wonderful rendition of the 'National Anthem.' NBLL Vice President Mark Cooney threw the ceremonial first pitch to catcher Danny Soliwoda to officially start the season.

NBLL was incorporated in 1955 and is one of the oldest leagues in  District 4, according to Joseph Candelora, president of NBLL. Approximately 38 teams and 468 players experience baseball through NBLL with games played throughout the week through the spring season, which runs through the end of June. After the regular season is All-Star and postseason play. Volunteers play an important role in the organization.
