T-Birds' Cross-Country Runs Strong Against Solid Competition


The North Branford Cross Country team competed at the Shoreline Conference Large School Meet on Sept. 24 at the Winthrop Middle School in Deep River.  The schools attending were Coginchaug, Cromwell, Haddam Killingworth, Morgan, and Valley Regional.

The girls' team beat Morgan and lost to the remainder of the schools. The boys' team came away with beating Valley Regional, Cromwell and Coginchaug and losing to Haddam-Killingworth and Morgan.

For the boys the top finishers were, Co-Captain Sean O’Connor (3rd, 18:09), Co-Captain Zach Augur (12th, 18:35), Keane Regan (13th, 18:39), Isaac Cammarata (33rd, 20:04), Bobby Querfeld (41st, 20:43), Spencer Bryden (44th, 20:52), Patrick Fisher (56th, 22:07) and Austin Gibilisco (71st, 23:03). 

Finishing for the girls were, Co-Captain Marissa Bale (14th, 22:56), Kirsten Madoule (22nd, 24:02), Winnie Chan (25th, 24:26), Rachel Sauro (29th, 25:01) and Victoria Pawlak (35th, 25:36).  Also finishing for the girls were Megan Oakes at 28:58, Jessica Munck at 31:42 and Grace Carr at 32:31.

On Sept. 28, the T-Birds traveled to Winding Trails Center in Farmington to participate in the 2nd Winding Trails Invitational Cross Country Meet.

"The competition was very challenging," said Coach Floyd Parness.  

The boys' varsity team came in 5th out of 12 schools; the girls' varsity team was not able to place because there were only four runners entered. O’Connor came in first for the boys at 17:52:41 (9th overall) with Bale being North Branford's top finisher for the girls at 23:01.93 (25th overall).

The remaining varsity girls finishing were Chan at 24:33.87 (46th), Pawlak at 25:26.24 (48th) and Sauro at 26:27.31 (54th). Competing in the Girls Junior Varsity Race were Alana Cotton (27:47.25), Carr (29:26.23) and Munck (30:21.21).  

Finishing for varsity boys were Regan at 18:16.93 (16th), Augur at 18:17.32 (18th), Querfeld at 19:08.64 (30th), Richard Hernandez at 20:20.16 (48th) and Cammarata at 21:54.74 (67th).  In the Boys Junior Varsity Race, Bryden came in first for North Branford at 21:05.03 (9th), Fisher at 21:45.69 (16th) and Gibilisco at 22:13.37 (27th).
