Connecticut Sees Rise In Virus-Carrying Mosquitoes

But before you light those sparklers, we regret to inform you that, according to the Courant, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station is reporting an increase in the population of virus-carrying mosquitoes in Connecticut.

The population of mosquitoes, which can carry West Nile virus, is up by more than double this year, the article says.
According to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, this year's large population is due to several factors including the mild winter, and the season's steamy and rainy weather.

The Courant says Connecticut hasn't seen any reports of West Nile virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis yet this year.

- limit the time you spend outdoors in the evening
- don't leave too much skin exposed; light-colored clothing is best
- apply insect repellent like DEET
- stay away from standing water
- light some citronella candles
