Go Fish! But Where Do You Go Around North Branford?

It's fishing season – where do you go to cast a line in and around North Branford?

Fishing season is in full swing and the fish are biting, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, but where do you go to reel in that big catch?

On our Facebook page, Kevin Jaracy asked:  "Are there any ponds in the area besides the state park on RT 5 to take kids fishing from shore?" Deirdre Hynes Salemme agreed, saying "I'd like to know some good fishing spots for kids, too!"

Several readers weighed in with these suggestions:

  • Benjamin Foster: "RT 77 Guilford (Quonnipaug), bottom of Snake Hill (Totoket Rd), Lake Besek (Middlefield), McKenzie reservoir (Wallingford)
  • Daniel Gaalogly: "Quinnipiac's property on Basset Dr has a pond that is stocked catch and release only but for kids probably a nice spot."
  • Holly Long Maturo: "Supply Pond in Branford"
  • Mary Villano: "I believe there is a pond on Young Apple Orchard road that is supposed to be stocked. My husband just takes my son to different spots along the Farm River and he has luck. There are other ponds around but they are in people's yards."
While I haven't done much fishing, I have been to Lake Quonnipaug with the kids, as well as Chatfield Hollow, which offers pond and stream fishing (that's my son at Chatfield Hollow for his 7th birthday fishing party in the picture – no luck but everyone had fun!).

Need more information on fishing in Connecticut? The DEEP has plenty of information on its website, including general fishing information, permits and licenses, learn to fish and more.

So where do you go when you want to cast a line? Do you have any tips or tricks for beginners?
