Ready to Run at the Potato Fest 5K?

This isn't your everyday 5K–it's a cross-country course through scenic farmland in North Branford.

Ever wonder where the runs? Think about what it would be like to do try out a run off the pavement? This Sunday’s 5K at the gives you a chance to give trail running a try.

“Most 5Ks in the area are road races,” said Floyd Parness, who is chairing the 5K. “It’s nice because it’s goes over rolling terrain, through fields and woods and over streams. The scenery is beautiful and it’s a challenging course.”

The fourth annual 5K Spud Run begins at 9:30 a.m. and is open to runners and walkers with the first 150 participants receiving a T-shirt. The Last Mile Race Management Company will provide professional timing.

Parness is hoping to increase this year’s field to almost 200 participants, noting that even with last year’s downpour, there was a good turnout.

“I’m just hoping for good weather this year,” said Parness.

There’s also a chance for kids under 12 to participate, too, with the 1-mile Tator Trot Fun Run, which will be run at 9 a.m., preceding the Spud Run.

There will be musical entertainment at the start and finish of the race, in addition to refreshments for runners, including rolls, bagels, pastries, ice pops, bananas and water.

There will also be trophies for the top male and female finishers in both the Spud Run and Tator Trot, along with plaques for the top male and female finishers in each age group for the Spud Run.
